Born of fire, Therapeutic Chokehold patrols this bleak wasteland promoting ideas of true liberty, freedom, and justice. Using the method violent pacification, it chokes its opponents into submission, ramming messages of compassion and understanding down the throats of the infidels.
Jeff Fox (vocals, guitar, *drums) and Angel Lopez (vocals, bass, blind badass) of Therapeutic Chokehold first came together in a hardcore-punk band in the late 1990’s that many compared to a sludgy Black Flag, called S.L.D. The two formed the first incarnation of what would later become Therapeutic Chokehold in 2000 with friend Jason Gervais on drums. At that time, the band auditioned singers for about a year to no avail.
After the band split up in late 2001, Angel and Jeff grew closer as friends and musical counterparts, becoming extremely prolific as songwriters, each honing his craft and taking vocal lessons. The two put together a small “jam room” in Lopez’s apartment and started to play constantly as a two-piece, with Fox on drums and Lopez on guitar, both singing. Throughout the years, the two auditioned many other musicians, and sporadically played with Gervais, but could never find a concrete drummer.
In 2006, after a chance encounter that brought Jeff into the Tampa pop/sludge-rock band Palantine, Therapeutic Chokehold recruited Vinnie Cosentino as the band’s drummer and recording engineer. The result was the band’s first full-length effort, titled Get Your Head Right, which was released in the Summer of 2009, worldwide, as well as the music video to the single Get Your Head Right, which was released in Spring 2010. However, Cosentino left the band in 2010.
Since that time, Therapeutic Chokehold has played many shows in the Tampa Bay area, most notably opening for The Spears (members of Pink Lincolns, Down By Law, and D.R.I.) at New World Brewery in December 2011, and Ballyhoo! at the State Theater in St. Petersburg. In February 2013 the band begun tracking for its sophomore effort, not yet titled, which will be released in Winter 2014, with drummer Jason Gervais back on the skins!
